Smoking cessation is tough to achieve mainly because nicotine an important ingredient in tobacco is highly addictive in nature. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms can be terrifying enough to prevent many smokers from breaking the habit. This is where the right dose of Champix an effective smoking cessation medication hits the spot.

What is Champix and why does it help you quit smoking?

Varenicline one of the active ingredients present in Champix belongs to a class of drugs known as acetylcholine receptors. Unlike products based on Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), Champix does not pump additional amounts of nicotine in your body. Champix works according to a unique dual mode of action. It binds itself to the nicotine receptors in your brain in order to prevent the nicotine in cigarettes from reaching them. It then releases small, controlled amounts of dopamine the chemical that is responsible for the pleasurable sensations associated with nicotine addiction. This helps to ease nicotine withdrawal symptoms and gradually get rid of the desire to smoke.

Why is the proper dose of Champix important?

Like other prescription medications, Champix needs to be taken in the right doses for maximum effectiveness. Adjusting the dosage without consulting your doctor is not advisable. Increasing the dosage will not increase the effectiveness of the medication, while reducing it will make it useless. Champix needs to be taken in very specific doses:

    Days 1 − 3: 0.5 mg once a day
    Days 4 − 7: 0.5 mg twice a day
    Day 8 1 mg twice a day
    End of treatment

Champix treatment is prescribed for a period of 12 weeks. If you are able to quit smoking successfully at the end of this period, you will be prescribed another 12 weeks of treatment that increases your chances of long term smoking cessation.
