Humankind has been using jewelry for thousands of years, perhaps starting from the caveman days. Of course in those days they did not have the option of using fancy metals and stones as we do nowadays, but the concept were basically the same. In ancient times they used basic materials such as bones of animals, tree branches, flowers, seashells and so on. Most of the time it was used as necklaces or crowns and in some rare cases body piercing was also done. This was usually done to the nose or ears. No matter what was used or how it was used, the objective was ultimately the same, to enhance ones cosmetic looks.

The purpose of all jewelry no matter what style is pretty much the same. The objective is to make one self look nicer and more appealing to others by wearing different types of crafted metals and precious stones. Jewelry can also be used to make a specific statement by people who live alternative lifestyles. There is no doubt that jewelry can enhance ones image, especially if it is artfully and tastefully done. The most common types of jewelry accessories on the market today are, rings, necklaces, bangles, earrings, nose rings, wristbands or charms, anklets and in some rare instances, crowns.

The most common metals used for these jewelry accessories will usually be, gold, silver, platinum, copper and in some rare cases brass and bronze. An ancient style of jewelry, that still influences jewelry designs to this day, is perhaps Egyptian jewelry.

This type of jewelry is popular throughout the world today for its unique designs. They usually represent religious or sacred symbols that were practiced in ancient Egypt. Some examples of this type of jewelry would be the eye of Horus, pyramids, Scarab, healing sign and so on.

In ancient Egypt, these types of jewelry pieces were not used as just simple pieces of jewelry. They were also seen as a type of talisman to protect oneself from evil. An example of that would be pendants and rings made in the shape of a key. Pendants were also made to look like certain animals such as snakes and cats. The symbol for long life and immortality is the Ankh. Most Egyptian jewelry was crafted from pure gold. Another design based on Egyptian jewelry is the royal lotus. It can be found on necklaces, bracelets, bangles and necklaces. It was the Egyptians who first started the trend of using beetles such as the scarab beetle, to make pendants.
