Why You Should’nt Try the Cabbage Soup Diet

I have been specialising in this field for around 6 years now and I focus my studies on fad diets, wether they work and the effects they can have on your body. For the next few weeks I will be writing articles for as many different fad diets as I can find myself. Here is my next installment, talking about the Cabbage Soup Diet.
The Cabbage Soup Diet, also known as The Sacred Heart Diet, Military Cabbage Soup Diet, TJ Miracle Soup Diet and the Russian Peasant Diet is basically a heavy consumption of low-calorie cabbage soup over a period of 7 days and has the intentions of losing you 10lbs in that time, from my point of view, this amount of weight loss in this short period of time is nearly impossible and unhealthy, and the lost weight will mostly be of water. The ‘pros’ of this diet are said to be fast weight loss, you can eat as much food as you want, that’s listed, and it provides a good kick start to other diets.
Typically, the diet consists of eating cabbage soup every day, complemented by some fruit, veg or beef, and drinks are limited to water except where stated otherwise. They say there are 6 key factors that make this diet successful and they are to follow the diet religiously, drink at least 4 glasses of water per day, remember that its only for 7 days, use multivitamin tablets to compliment, eat as much soup as you can and don’t go hungry, try spices to liven it up and break the monotony. A typical diet looks like this;
Day 1 – Cabbage soup, as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas
Day 2 – Cabbage soup, vegetables including 1 baked potato with a little butter
Day 3 – Cabbage soup, fruit and veg excluding potatoes and bananas
Day 4 – Cabbage soup, up to 8 bananas and as much skimmed milk as you want
Day 5 – Cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes
Day 6 – Cabbage soup, as much beef and veg (excluding potatoes) as you want
Day 7 – Cabbage soup, brown rice, veg (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice
I will now give you my verdict on the cabbage soup diet and explain why I think you should not try it. First of all this is purely a short-term weight loss offering and unsuitable for a long term diet. This being because it is low calorie, low fat and very high fiber. You will go through several days at a time taking extremely high sodium and pretty much zero protein. This is unhealthy. You will feel nauseous, weak and have decreased concentration levels. Another common side effect is extremely bad wind! So you may want to keep those windows open at home and in the office! I do not recommend this diet to anybody.

Nourishing Skin Care Routine

If you have dry skin, you will need: avocados, walnuts/almonds, brown rice, pineapples, black /Bengal gram flour.
- Face wash: Soak a cotton ball in fresh pineapple juice and gently rub your entire face with it. Pineapple juice is mildly acidic and will cleanse your skin without leaving it dry.
- Face scrub: Lightly grind a little brown rice to obtain a coarse flour. Soak about 1 tablespoon of the nuts in a little water overnight and then grind it into a thin paste. Add one teaspoon of rice flour to this paste and use the mixture to cleanse and moisturize your skin.
- Face pack: Blend an avocado to obtain a thin paste. Mix this paste along with 2 teaspoons of gram flour to form a smooth paste. This face pack will help to nourish and moisturize your skin. If you have oily skin, you will need: Lemons, oranges, strawberries, Bengal gram flour, Fuller’s earth
- Face wash: Soak a cotton ball in a little fresh Lemon juice, gently rub your entire face with it and then rinse it off. Lemon juice is a relatively strong natural acid and will dissolve the excess oil on the surface of your skin as well as unclog blocked pores.
- Face scrub: Crush 3 to 4 berries and mix the juice with a teaspoon spoon of sugar and half a teaspoon of flour. Use this paste to exfoliate your skin and even out your complexion. Berries have astringent properties and are also rich in antioxidants and vitamin A which helps to nourish and fortify the skin.
- Face pack: Mix about 3 tablespoons of fresh orange juice and 1 ½ tablespoons of Fuller’s earth and use the paste as a nourishing and cleansing face pack. If you have normal skin, you will need: grapefruit, watermelon, cucumber, honey, banana, brown rice, Fuller’s earth.
- Face wash: Dip a cotton ball in a mixture of fresh grapefruit juice and watermelon juice and massage your face with it. Grapefruit juice helps to cleanse the skin while watermelon juice helps to nourish and moisturize it.
- Face scrub: Mash or blend ½ a banana and mix in a few spoons of coarse brown rice flour to obtain a gentle, nourishing exfoliating scrub.
- Face pack: Mix fresh cucumber juice, honey and Fuller’s earth so that you have a smooth paste. Use this paste as a face pack to cleanse, nourish and soothe your skin.

Punching Bag Training 101

It is there to help better your endurance, strength, and to work on proper punching techniques and combinations. Despite the name, the punching bag shouldn’t just be a bag that you punch. It should be treated as a true opponent so that you can prepare as much as possible for the real thing. When fighting an opponent, important things to consider are blocking effectively and using many combos to keep your opponent on his toes.

For a righty, the left jab is your lead punch. Although the jab isn’t as powerful as the cross (right/strong arm), it is there to setup scenarios where a cross can be landed- it is usually the start to every combination. The cross is meant to stun and trick your opponent so that a big punch can be landed.
With your right hand by your chin for protection against the punching bag (your opponent), a jab should be very quick. As a starting position both fists should be by your chin for protection. It is very important that after a jab is thrown, you return back to the starting position. The fist should be turned 90 degrees when throwing a jab, starting with your thumb faced up and making impact to the punching bag with your thumb to the side. Again, even though you may be training with a heavy bag that won’t necessarily attack you, it is important to always come back to your chin to protect yourself. Practice makes perfect.
Don’t let the punching bag win____________________
Whether it is the jab or any other punch, it is important to remember to make contact primarily with the pointer and middle finger knuckles. There are many injuries because punches are landed right between the middle two knuckles. These injuries can last months or years, so this is not something to scoff over. Injuries can occur with a bag or with an opponent.
Whenever you throw a punch, it is important to effectively transfer weight into your punches and to keep your opponent on his toes. I love this sport so I could chew your ear off forever giving you thousands of punching bag techniques- Instead of doing this, I just want to stress a few of my favorite shots and shifting your weight effectively.
Jab: Strive to punch straight forward and retreat straight back, using hips for power. To ensure a straight punch, line up your fist with a spot on the heavy bag and just focus on staying in line with that spot.
Left body shot: Lean in towards the heavy bag, use power from hips, pivoting off the ball of your left foot. Many times this shot is meant to contact the kidneys because it takes a lot out of your opponent. With proper pivoting and weight transfer, you should be able to move the punching bag a good amount.
Left hook: Ensure elbow is at the same elevation as your shoulder for a strong punch. With your arm bent at a right angle, pivot off your back foot. Again you should be able to move the punching bag a good amount.
Remember to have fun, stay focused and get the most out of training with your punching bag. Even though the heavy back won’t hit back, remember to keep the guard up. And even though it might be fun to just use your stronger arm and throw crosses constantly, the jab is really the shot that sets up the fight so that the stronger punches can have a place later.
